Noma Epidemiology

Noma affects people living all over the world; however, gaps in reporting infrastructure have led to gaps in our understanding of the true geographic distribution of this disease. Case reports and studies, published in the research literature between 2000-2021, were analyzed and graphed below. This map likely does not represent the total number of noma cases which truly occurred and will be updated regularly as more recent data is analyzed.

About this map

Map generated using QGIS and templates from Natural Earth. Some cases of noma reported in the literature were not confined to one particular country and are thus not show above, although these cases are indexed in the source data. Not all cases reported between 2000-2021 were included in this map; some reports could not be located and therefore were not included in the analysis. Additionally, please be aware that some of the referenced works include data from overlapping years, meaning that cases may potentially be double counted in the image. As mentioned above, this map will be updated regularly with more recent data coming soon. If you have any comments on this map, please reach out to us at: contact@internationalnomanetwork.org
